First Lady sees value in Parent Education
Childhood Obesity has taken center stage again as Michelle Obama announced that she is making this her major initiative as First Lady. This is encouraging news especially since Mrs. Obama has recognized the role parents and parent education play in preventing obesity with children, which is the premise of Dr. Sears’ L.E.A.N. Start Program. What might we expect to come out of Mrs. Obama’s admirable efforts to take on this challenge?
The efforts by First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative which addresses childhood obesity is bringing this epidemic to the forefront of American politics. This is encouraging news because obesity rates have tripled in the last thirty years and nearly one-third of American children are overweight or obese.
Mrs. Obama also recognizes the role that parents play in regards to the health of their children, a role that Dr. Sears has been educating parents on for years. Parent control the food that comes into the house and are therefore ultimately responsible for teaching their child proper nutrition.
The focal points of the "Let's Move" initiative are: Healthy Choices, Healthier Schools, Physical Activity and Accessible and Affordable Healthy Food. However, as with so many government efforts, politics and bureaucracy play a large role in the effort. President Obama has established a task force to solve the problem of childhood obesity with members of this task force being:
(1) the Secretary of the Interior
(2) the Secretary of Agriculture
(3) the Secretary of Health and Human Services
(4) the Secretary of Education
(5) the Director of the Office of Management and Budget
(6) the Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady
(7) the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy; and
(8) the heads of other executive departments, agencies, or offices as the Chair may designate.
As with past government task forces the premise is promising but reality is it's the lobbyists for the Dairy, Meat and Agricultural Companies that dictate to the USDA what the food pyramid should be. Quantity of food, instead of quality of food is the bill of goods that gets sold.
