What is the goal of teaching a L.E.A.N. Workshop?
The goal of L.E.A.N. Workshops is to educate and inform every parent about simple techniques they can implement in their everyday lives to help their children develop and maintain a lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise habits, as well as positively impacting and improving their children’s leaning and behavior. L.E.A.N. Workshops teach parents how to impact their children by shaping young tastes, modeling healthy behaviors and practicing healthy shopping, food preparation and eating behaviors. As a result of educating parents, children develop healthy habits that improve their behavior and academic performance and allow them to grow into healthy and happy adults.
The overall goal of changing the world one family at a time is accomplished by training individuals to become independent Certified L.E.A.N. Coaches and teach L.E.A.N. Workshops in their communities.
Where can I teach L.E.A.N. Workshops?

What are the requirements for becoming a Certified L.E.A.N. Coach?
In order to become a certified coach, an individual must:
- Hold a professional degree or license from an accredited institution, have some teaching experience (in small groups or classrooms), or have experience in the health and wellness industry. The professional degree does NOT have to be in a health or nutrition related field.
- Attend an online L.E.A.N. Coach Certification Training and Certification course.
- Complete the certification exam and oral presentation with a passing grade of 85% or higher.
What can a Certified L.E.A.N. Coach do with their certification?
Certification authorizes a L.E.A.N. Coach to:
- Independently teach and facilitate the L.E.A.N. curriculum in a group workshop setting or on a one-on-one/family basis.
- Charge and receive an income for their services as a coach. 100% of any income generated is retained by the coach.
- Use Dr. Sears L.E.A.N. name and materials subject to terms and conditions.
- Utilize L.E.A.N. Coach Website resources.
- Give informational seminars or informal talks in as a means of marketing or publicizing classes.
What does a Certified L.E.A.N. Coach charge for classes?
Workshop fees are not regulated by the L.E.A.N. Group. As an independent coach you may choose to offer your services free of charge or for a fee. Current coaches are typically charging $60 – $75 per attendee, or a flat rate of $500 – $1,000 for a class size up to 20 attendees.
Do you provide any marketing support?
Current Certified L.E.A.N. Coaches either:
- Add L.E.A.N. workshops to their existing business, or
- Provide L.E.A.N. workshops on behalf of their employer, or
- Are independent contractors
Therefore, The L.E.A.N. Group, LLC does not provide business planning or promotion for L.E.A.N. Coaches. However, we do provide the following:
- Insights into promoting the courses to potential venues/groups as part of training
- Templates for presentations and press releases
- Availability of marketing collateral; brochures, posters, fliers etc.
- Virtual Classrooms, websites, and other online marketing resources
Are these workshops just for overweight and obese individuals?
No, L.E.A.N. workshops are for parents and families of all shapes and sizes.
Are there any limitations to what I can do with my L.E.A.N. Coach Certification?
Yes. As a Certified L.E.A.N. Coach it is not acceptable to:
- Present oneself as an employee, agent or other representative of The LEAN Group, LLC (Exceptions: Master Trainers or consultants).
- Offer independent training, certification or licensure for Dr. Sears’ L.E.A.N. workshops or on behalf of The LEAN Group, LLC.
- Re-sell any L.E.A.N. workshop guides, books, DVDs or other materials except for use in an official L.E.A.N. workshop class.
What are the requirements for maintaining the Certified L.E.A.N. Coach status?
Re-certification is granted to those who maintain a favorable status with The L.E.A.N. Group, LLC as evidenced by:
- Payment of annual re-certification fee.
- Maintenance of professional standards of conduct as defined by The LEAN Group, LLC.
The benefits of maintaining certification are:
- Referrals of potential clients in Certified Coach’s area
- Regular access to a Certified Master Trainer
- Advanced notice of new certification workshops, products, materials, and information.
- Monthly newsletters and promotions via email
- Hot topic coach conference calls (recent topics have included soy, connecting with mom groups, and supplements)
- Use of our Online resources
How can participants know that I am a Certified L.E.A.N. Coach?
Upon completion of the training course, Certified Coaches will receive a certificate identifying them as a Dr. Sears L.E.A.N. Coach and stating how many contact hours they have completed.
What are the evaluation methods used in the L.E.A.N. Coach Certification training?
- Candidates will present an oral presentation on key concepts and skills from the training.
- Final written exam which consists of multiple choice and true/false questions.
Would this be a way to diversify or enhance my current profession or practice?
Definitely. If you are in contact with parents every day in relation to their children, this workshop will help you be even more successful at making a difference in those families’ lives. Professionals who would benefit from certification include: Healthcare providers, HR representatives from corporations, educators and wellness providers.
What is the L.E.A.N. Start Guide?
The L.E.A.N. Start Guide is an 80 page book that is used during every L.E.A.N. Start Family class; there are several opportunities for parents to take notes in their books during class so the book becomes a useful reference tool once the class is complete. The Parent’s Guide is required for each parent, caregiver, or couple who attend a workshop.
Will I have to order Parent’s Guides for my workshops?
You will need to order Parent’s Guides on an ongoing basis and have them available for each new parent or couple participating in your class.
Are the L.E.A.N. Start Guides available in Spanish?
Currently, the L.E.A.N. Start Guide and the child’s Activity Book are available in Spanish.
Who endorses the L.E.A.N. Workshops?
Baby Boot Camp, LLC; Children & Families Commission of Orange County (CA); Sky Ridge Medical Center (HealthOne); and Partners in Pediatrics; International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA); American Dietetic Association (ADA); Bauman College; Brandman University; Attachment Parenting.
What is the format of instruction?
All training and certification courses are online based and will take 6 – 12weeks to complete, depending on how many certifications you choose. Each week will begin on Monday and all activities will be due by Sunday. Each week, candidates can expect to participate in reading, viewing three on-line instruction modules and completing one or more activities which will then be submitted.
Are there set times for the online instruction? May I complete the online instruction at any time during the week?
The online system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accommodate you at any hour of the day or night when it is convenient. The only piece of training that has a set time during the week is the weekly question and answer conference call with the L.E.A.N. Instructor. If you are unable to attend the conference call, you may choose to listen to a recording of the call.
Is special software needed to take the course online?
No, the system is compatible with all browsers including FireFox, Explorer, etc.. You will need a high-speed internet connection to view the eLearning segments. The online training contains flash based presentations that are not currently viewable on an ipad since it does not currently support flash.
Will I be able to interact with other candidates during the course?
Absolutely, we encourage candidates to work together; each student will also have access to the Candidate Forum/discussion board where they can connect with others.
What if I am having trouble with the coursework?
There will be multiple opportunities throughout each week for you to connect with the instructors via the forum/discussion board, conference calls, e-mail and phone. We want you to succeed! If there is a problem, please contact us.
What if I don’t pass the certification exam?
It is our intention to provide you will adequate training necessary to successfully complete the exam; however, if you do not pass the exam, you will be provided feedback from your initial exam and be given the opportunity to retake the exam.
If I live in a country other than the United States how will I be able to get live help?
Accommodations will be in place so all candidates will have the opportunity to connect with instructors for all time zones.
What if we have a family emergency, and I am unable to complete the course?
Should you have an urgent situation that will significantly impact your ability to successfully participate in the course, please contact us immediately as accommodations will be made on a case by case basis.
What if I am unable to complete the course during the set time-period?
Opportunities will be given to catch up to complete the course on time. Should you fall too far behind or fail to complete the course, you have the option to be transferred to another course at a later date. There is a $100.00 transfer fee that applies to all transfers.
