Condiment Conundrum

Many people don’t realize that the condiments we put on our food can be the downfall of the meal.  Ketchup, perhaps the most popular for kids, is mostly high fructose corn syrup (as is BBQ sauce).  Ranch dip usually has a lot of additive and unhealthy fat.  Although healthier versions of these three can be found. Also try serving condiments that add nutrients to your family’s meal.  Hummus, guacamole, yogurt dip, nut butters, marinara sauce, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil taste great.  Beware of condiments that are “lite” or “low fat.” These often have added sugar, additives, and sugar substitutes to make up for the loss of fat. Try to encourage kids to enjoy the taste of the food without having to smother it in ketchup.

There are also at least 2 brands of ketchup now, that do not have HFCS. It's nice that there is finally an alternative! Also, mayo is very easy to make at home. Check the book "Whole Foods for the Whole Family" for the recipe.
